Abstract

In the presented work, stiffness and damping properties of eggshell based epoxy composites areinvestigated. Ingredients used for preparation of the composite includes 25-45 μm sized egg shell powder, PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS), hardener, and silaneas a coupling agent. Influence of micro-powder and coupling agent proportion on vibration properties of the epoxy composite is investigated. Experimentation on the prototype samples has been conducted using a vibration shaker, accelerometer and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyser, to investigate the influence of the micro powder addition on damping factor and stiffness of the composite. The study reveals that there is up to 201% improvement in the damping factor with 2.5% addition of the micro powder by weight. The experimental study indicates that the stiffness properties of the composite are not influenced by addition of the egg shell micro powder. A case study is demonstrated with finite element simulation to validate the advantages of using the proposed epoxycomposite for a Miro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) sensor packaging. In case of harmonicforce of 0.2 N acting on the sensor withinthe frequency range of 40-60 Hz, peak acceleration of the MEMS sensor educes by 48%, whereas the force transmissibility reduces by 44%.Keywords—Eggshell Micro-powder, Epoxy, Biological-Composite, FEA, Vibrational analysis.
