Abstract

Worms and worm gears are most commonly machined by the hobbing method using rotary tools, and are formed in the finishing pass at the full profile height. In this case, the profile of the tool action surface determines the profile of the machined surface and, for technological reasons, a rectilinear (less frequently circular) axial profile of the tool action surface is generally assumed. For machining worm surfaces with a finger-type mill, the profile of the machined surface is not coupled with the tool profile. In that case, the worm surface is shaped in multiple passes, and its form depends on the positioning of the tool. This method of machining must be realized on CNC machine tools, and the tool is universal in its nature. As a result, the machining surface profile can be arbitrary, which may provide a basis for the development of worm gear designs.
